Woman accused of setting grass on fire because no one would come to cut it

NIAGARA FALLS — A Ferry Avenue woman was charged with arson after she allegedly set the grass on fire in a neighboring yard on Sunday night.

The suspect, Lampai Hongsiri, 42, told police the property had been vacant for about three years and she had deliberately set the knee high grass on fire because she knew no one was coming to cut it down.

Police reported the fire had been started in a fire pit set up against a fence at 3630 Ferry Ave. just before 9 p.m. The fire completely burned the backyard at the house, leaving a charred layer of soot that spread all the way to the house, according to the report. No damage was reported to the house. Another neighbor was able to douse the fire, Fire Inspector Gerald Aderhold told police.

Hongsiri was charged with fifth-degree arson and second-degree reckless endangerment.
