WSW nips Clarence
With the recent stretch of cold weather in the rear-view mirror, the spring sports schedule picked up Thursday afternoon.
Headlining play on the diamond, JC Siwy went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to help West Seneca West open its ECIC I season with a 5-4 victory over Clarence. Jonathan Broad earned the save for the Indians, striking out four.
Elsewhere in ECIC I, Garrett Baugher struck out seven on the mound and also doubled and tripled at the plate, driving in a pair of runs for Hamburg in a 7-0 win over cross-town rival Frontier.
In ECIC III play, Sean Gibson pitched four innings of relief with three strikeouts and also doubled at the plate in Amherst’s 5-4 victory over Depew.
Cal Nowicki threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Sawyer Overhoff drove in three runs in Eden’s 18-0 win over Cleveland Hill in ECIC IV play.
Justin Beyer went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Niagara Falls to a 7-2 win over Lew-Port in a Niagara Frontier League contest. Matt Gray earned the win on the mound, striking out five.
Elsewhere in the NFL, the combination of Brendan Sheehan and Jake Niland did plenty of damage for Grand Island in a 19-8 win over North Tonawanda. Sheehan went 5 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Niland was 4 for 4 and also had two doubles and four RBIs.
Williamsville North kept its record perfect early in the season at 3-0 with a 6-4 win over cross-town rival Williamsville East. Josh Surowoic went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Eden gets on the stick
Paiton Basinski and Jill Murray combined for six hits in leading Eden to a 5-2 win over Cleveland Hill in ECIC IV play. Basinski went 3 for 3, while Murray was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs
In the Niagara Frontier League, Lina Mirabella went 3 for 3 for Kenmore West in a 7-6 victory over Lockport. Grace Ferguson added two hits and three RBIs for the Blue Devils.
Emily Trotman blasted a two-run home run to help Mount St. Mary to a 5-2 win over Williamsville South in a nonleague game.
Joe’s tops St. Francis lacrosse
Jack Lalley and Ryan Jacobs had a hat trick each in leading St. Joe’s to a 12-8 victory over St. Francis in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association. The Marauders improved to 2-0 in league play.
Orchard Park moved to 5-1 on the season with an 18-3 victory over Frontier. Josh Bernas led the Quakers with four goals and two assists.
Grand Island goes to 4-0
Jess Surace helped Grand Island stay perfect at 4-0 on the season with five goals in a 16-5 win over Williamsville East in Class B.
Hanna Nagowski (four goals, three assists) and Anna Orlando (three goals, four assists) had seven points each for Lancaster in an 18-6 victory over Williamsville North in a nonleague contest. Jenna Hagen added three goals and three assists for the Legends.
