Firefighter to be honored at fire truck dedication

NIAGARA FALLS – The Niagara Falls Fire Department will honor the legacy of Capt. Daniel Thomas when city’s newest apparatus – Rescue Truck 1 – is dedicated in his name at 2 p.m. next Friday in the Niagara Falls Fire Department Memorial Park, at Firehouse 8, 320 Hyde Park Boulevard.

The dedication will honor Thomas, a 33-year-veteran of the fire department and the first African-American firefighter in the City of Niagara Falls Fire Department. Thomas retired in 1985 and he died on Sept. 22, 2013.

He was active in the community, especially on the Firefighters Toy Fund. He also received many citations for bravery and dedication throughout his career.

“He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on with this apparatus dedication,” said a statement from the Niagara Falls Fire Department.
