The baseball season has just started for Western New York teams and while it's still too early to figure out which teams in the Monsignor Martin Association figure to be the last two standing during the annual Georgetown Cup championship series later this spring, Canisius figures to have one talented lineup - if one uses college commitments as a measuring stick.
The Crusaders held a signing ceremony Wednesday morning at Canisius High School. Among the 17 student-athletes in eight sports to announce their college commitments, five play baseball for longtime coach Bryan Tenney. They include Dan Dallas, who signed with Division I Monmouth -- a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and Division II Mercyhurst signees Vinny Chiarenza, Russ Mistretta and Zach Mitchell.
Of course, Canisius' powerhouse football team will send its share of seniors to college ranks. In addition to All-WNY first team selection Justin Jones (Robert Morris), others to earn playing opportunities include Jordan Fears and Richard Roberson with SUNY Morrisville, Tyler Stranahan (Washington and Jefferson), and Alaan Montgomery (Brockport).
Dan Barry from Canisius' unbeaten volleyball team is heading to Stevens Institute of Technology (volleyball).Others announcing their plans include squash player Kingman Bassett (Franklin and Marshall), soccer player Alex Cancilla (Marist), swimmer Sam Sawyer (Cleveland State), rugby player Nick Dillon (St. Bonaventure) and rower Dan Wrafter (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
