Ruth E. Farino, retired nurse also owned North Tonawanda optical business with husband

Feb. 8, 1927 – April 9, 2016

NORTH TONAWANDA – Ruth Elizabeth Farino of North Tonawanda, a retired nurse, died Saturday in the Hospice Unit at Buffalo General Medical Center. She was 89.

Born in North Tonawanda, the former Ruth Maldiner was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School and was a member of the first graduating class of nurses from Niagara University.

Mrs. Farino began her nursing career at DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda, then worked as a school nurse and a nursing supervisor at Georgian Court Nursing Home.

She and her husband also owned and operated Farino Opticians in North Tonawanda for many years.

She enjoyed her family cottage at Long Beach, Ont., and was a champion card player who, according to her family, never refused an offer to play cards.

Her husband, James J., died in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, James M. and Frank J.; two daughters, Louise M. Casciano and Mary V. Sullivan; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
