Stephen E. Cavanaugh, of Orchard Park, who practiced law for more than 50 years, died unexpectedly Friday in Gates Vascular Institute. He was 80.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Bishop Timon High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Bonaventure University in 1957 and a juris doctor degree from the University of Buffalo Law School in 1961. While he was attending law school, he served with the Buffalo Fire Department.
Mr. Cavanaugh started practicing law with the firm of Charles McDonough, then was a partner in Cunningham, Cole, Sorrentino and Cavanaugh and its successor firms.
He later maintained an individual practice before retiring a couple of years ago.
He was a past president and director of the Erie County Bar Association, a past president of the Erie County Bar Foundation and a former president of the Orchard Park Country Club.
A member of the New York State Bar Association, at the time of his death he was a member of the Eighth Judicial District Attorney Grievance Committee.
He and his wife, the former Mildred C. McDermott, would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in May.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Catherine C. Wolfgang, Jane M., Julia E. Krasny and Clare M.; a son, Stephen R.; a brother, James; and seven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 4414 S. Buffalo St., Orchard Park.
