Edward W. Guzdek, Sr., Amherst Police detective, Navy vet

April 20, 1942 – April 7, 2016

Edward W. Guzdek Sr., a retired member of the Town of Amherst Police Department and president of the Police Conference of New York for 19 years, died Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 73.

Mr. Guzdek was born in Buffalo and graduated from South Park High School and Buffalo State College.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963 as a maintenance electrician on the USS Fulton. He also worked on the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine.

Mr. Guzdek was a member of the Amherst Police Department for 21 years, serving as an officer and detective prior to his retirement in 1989.

He was president of the Amherst Police Club for 14 years.

Mr. Guzdek had served as chairman of the New York State Civil Service Police Examination Review Board until his death. He was the regional vice president of the National Association of Police Organizations, as well as recording secretary and a charter member active in the formation of the organization.

He was married to his sweetheart from the sixth grade, the former Donna J. Diehl, for 54 years.

They enjoyed spending their winters in Fort Myers, Fla.

Mr. Gudzek is survived by a daughter, Donna Lynn Nowak; two sons, Edward W. Jr. and Eric; a sister, Elverna “Sis” Kotkiewicz; a brother, Charles; and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 1317 Eggert Road, Eggertsville.
