Letter: New York should update rules for primary voting

New York should update rules for primary voting

About a month ago, I called the Board of Elections to change my affiliation. I was told I could do that, but I could not vote in the primary until 2017. So, in essence, my vote for this year’s primary has been taken away from me.

I always thought one of our rights was to vote for the candidate we choose. A primary is an important vote. I have voted every year since 1951. I am now 82, and I have had my voting right taken away from me.

Some states allow you to change your affiliation the day of voting. This is a very important presidential election year and I will have to stay home and not vote. New York State, is this fair? It seems in this state, we are always behind.
