A trailer for the first standalone "Star Wars" film debuted today and it offers glimpses into a very familiar universe - albeit with new characters.
In the preview for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," being released in theaters on Dec. 16, you'll see the Death Star, AT-AT walkers, the Star Destroyer, stormtroopers and rebel fighters along with a host of new characters played by Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Mads Mikkelsen and Donnie Yen.
In the most intriguing moment, a dark-clad figure kneels before someone surrounded by Imperial Guards - shades of Darth Vader and the Emperor. (There is not, however, any sign - yet - of Boba Fett.)
The little that is known about "Rogue One" is that the action takes place leading up to “Episode IV: A New Hope” and it will feature a group of resistance fighters who unite to steal the plans to the Death Star, something alluded to in the opening crawl for the original "Star Wars" film, "A New Hope."
"It s a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy."
"Rogue One," producer Kathleen Kennedy told starwars.com, "goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential 'Star Wars' feel that fans have come to know."
