LOCKPORT – Niagara County’s three motor vehicle offices will have a friendly contest to sign up the most organ donors this month, County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said Wednesday.
He and about two dozen other officials signed organ-donor cards Tuesday in the Lockport DMV office. The Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda offices also are taking part in the effort to encourage drivers to sign the donor form on the backs of their driver’s licenses. Nearly 40 percent of Niagara County drivers have done so already. The figure is only 18 percent statewide, second-lowest in the nation, while New York is third in the number of patients awaiting transplants.
Jastrzemski said he and County Legislator Richard L. Andres, R-North Tonawanda, will spring for a pizza lunch for the winning office. Jastrzemski said county clerks also are trying to see which county can increase its organ donor registry by the largest amount during April, which is Organ Donor Awareness Month.
The Clerk’s Office is cooperating with Upstate New York Transplant Services in the card-signing effort.
