The Erie County Medical Center and Unyts (Upstate New York Transplant Services) have kicked off Donate Life Month to raise awareness of the need for donations of human organs and to sign up more people for the state donor registry.
New York State has the lowest rate of sign-ups for organ donation in the country, says Unyts president and chief executive officer Mark Simon. At the same time, New York residents make up more than 10 percent of the more than 121,000 people waiting for organ transplants nationwide.
Simon points out that a single donor can assist as many as 50 people with organs, heart valves, corneas, skin, bones and tendons. Donor enrollment forms are available at local auto bureaus or online at unyts.org/checkyes.
