Respect isn’t automatic; a president must earn it
I am responding to the letter, “Regardless of affiliation, president merits respect.” I think the writer confuses the “office of the president” with the person occupying it at the time. Donald Duck could be elected president. The occupant, however, has to earn my respect.
I respect the “office” of the president as did Ronald Reagan, who refused to take his suit coat off in respect for the office. If Hitler would have been elected president – and that very well could have happened, as Germany appointed him chancellor – would you respect him? This president has done nothing to earn my respect.
