LIES, Bert A. Jr., M.D.

LIES - Bert A. Jr., M.D. Of Santa Fe, NM and formerly of Aspen, CO and Buffalo, NY, died on Sunday, March 20, 2016 after an illness.
Born in Buffalo in 1939, Bert graduated from Hamilton College in 1960. Later he entered the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1964. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery in 1969 and joined the Godfrey Orthopaedic Group. He was fortunate to work with several professional sports teams, including the Buffalo Bills and Boston Bruins. He later formed his own orthopaedic practice specializing in pediatric orthopaedics, which continued through 1983. His greatest satisfaction professionally was caring for children with cerebral palsy.
Beginning in 1977, Bert began volunteering with the Indian Health Service as a visiting orthopaedist on the Navajo reservation in Gallup, NM. In 1983, he relocated his practice to Santa Fe, NM. He dedicated himself to caring for patients both in his private practice and as an attending physician at St. Vincent Hospital, until his retirement in 1996. He also served as an orthopaedic and occupational consultant to the Aspen Ski Company beginning in 1989. Bert was an active member of the Santa Fe community, developing an avid interest in Native American and contemporary art. He served as a board member at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian beginning in 1985, and as president from 1987-1988. He was also an active supporter of SITE Santa Fe, serving as a board member from 1992-1993, and co-founding the SITE Santa Fe Publications Fund in 1995. Beyond Santa Fe, he began his service on the National Council of the Whitney Museum of American Art beginning in 1994 and the Aspen Art Museum in 1999, where he also served on the Board of Trustees from 2002-2004. He was also an active supporter of Artpace in San Antonio, TX, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN and the New Museum in NYC. Family and friends knew well the remarkable force of nature that was Bert. He had boundless energy, unlimited enthusiasm, and a quick intelligence as well as an ability to generate a party wherever he went. He had a deep love of family, particularly his wife Rosina and daughters Elizabeth and Becky. Throughout his life, he was an avid sportsman which included college football, lacrosse, tennis, and skiing. Among his biggest joys was skiing with his four grandchildren in the Colorado Rockies and walking with his beloved Leonbergers - Dagne and Emil. Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Bert Alvin and Mary Louise Lies of Buffalo, NY and his sister, Elizabeth Louise Lies. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty years, Rosina Lee Yue; his two daughters, Elizabeth Lies Wey of Princeton, NJ and Becky Lies O'Grady of Edina, MN; his sons-in-law, Philip Wey, MD and Shawn O'Grady; and his four grandchildren, Nick and Alex Wey and Jack and Mary O'Grady. He is also survived by his brother, Brian Lies of Columbus, OH, sister-in-law, Valerie Lies and their son, Taylor Lies. Donations may be made in Bert's memory to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Hamilton College and the Whitney Museum. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
