Nurses at Buffalo nursing home vote to join union

Licensed practical nurses who work at the former Niagara Lutheran Home, a nursing home and rehabilitation center on Hager Street in Buffalo that is now under new ownership, have voted to join 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East.

The 31 LPNs who work at the facility, now the Humboldt House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, voted to join the union on Thursday. They join 60 certified nursing assistants at the facility who have been members of 1199SEIU for three years.

Union officials said in a statement that concerns about pay and benefits, staffing levels and job security were at the core of the organizing campaign. Contract negotiations between a union committee and management for both the LPNs and the CNAs are set to begin April 21.
