Volunteers sought for Canal Clean Sweep

Parks & Trails New York is looking for volunteer groups and individuals to participate in the 11th annual Canal Clean Sweep, the spring cleaning of the state canal system and Canalway Trail, during the weekend of April 22-24.

More than 100 events have been scheduled along the 524-mile-long canal system that weekend, leading up to the 192nd canal navigation season, beginning May 1.

Those interested in volunteering should visit and sign up for events scheduled in the Tonawandas, Amherst, Lockport, Middleport, Medina or Albion. Local organizers provide necessary tools and supplies, as well as free t-shirts as supplies allow.

Last year more than 150 groups and 3,000 volunteers participated in the clean-up weekend statewide.
