The Rev. Dr. Philip S. Gittings III, interim pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo, died unexpectedly Feb. 26. He was 66.
Born in Pittsburgh, he was a 1967 graduate of Dunkirk High School and attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. He completed his doctorate in 1978 at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and did post-doctoral work at Princeton Theological Seminary and Vanderbilt University.
As a minister, Rev. Gittings served churches in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kansas, Illinois, New Jersey and New York. He had been interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo since 2010 and helped establish One Symphony Circle Inc. to help preserve the historic E B. Green church building.
He enjoyed fly fishing and classical guitar and had an affection for Gordon setters.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, the former Margaret Garvin; a son, Philip S. IV; a daughter, Catherine Garvin Gittings; two sisters, Caroline Gittings Fleming and Rebecca; and two brothers, Dr. Steve and David.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, 1 Symphony Circle.
