Science museum book talks to focus on the serious side of food

The New York Council for the Humanities has joined forces with the Buffalo Museum of Science to offer “The Serious Side of Food,” a free reading and discussion series that starts next week.

Jessica Meyers Altman – a plant-based chef from Clarence certified in plant-based nutrition and blogger at – will lead the free discussions.

Texts were selected by author and former New York Times restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton, who will provide an introductory essay that contextualizes the topics and themes of the series.

Council for the Humanities’ Adult Reading and Discussion programs are designed to foster active reading and thinking, incorporating texts that serve as catalysts for civic engagement and cultural understanding, as well as personal reflection.

“With its thematic focus, this reading and discussion program offers an unusual twist on the standard book group format by making time for thinking deeply about one idea, over time, from a variety of perspectives,” said Sara Ogger, council executive director.

Session dates, times and reading selections are as follows. The books will be discussed at the Science Museum, 1020 Humboldt Parkway:

Session 1 – “Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health,” by Marion Nestle, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Session 2 – “The Third Plate,” by Dan Barber, 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 20.

Session 3 – “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto,” by Michael Pollan, 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 27.

Session 4 – “Diet for A Small Planet,” by Frances Moore Lappe, 1 to 3 p.m., May 4.
