America would benefit from reinstating draft
It’s unbelievable that a group of nonveteran politicians, in partnership with the nonveteran secretary of defense, can portray combat as ordinary, gender-compatible employment. Generals are going along with this travesty because they do not want to lose their positions.
Has anyone thought about what it would be like for a woman soldier to be captured in the Middle East, considering customary widespread degradation of women and honor killings?
We’ve had too much call for someone else’s U.S. boots on the ground in foreign countries, with reliance on stop-loss, foreign nationals, women, Halliburton and Blackwater, in place of citizen soldiers.
The draft was discontinued by President Richard Nixon to mitigate future citizen involvement with executive war-making policy, after public pressure brought the end to U.S. participation in the Vietnam War.
If we want our country back, we must return to the draft to be a fully functioning part of our country and take an active role in that which is done in our name.
