Funeral services with military honors for Dr. Rory James Howard, a native of Buffalo, will be held at noon Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee St., with burial in the veterans section of Forest Lawn.
Dr. Howard, a retired Army physician who practiced medicine and surgery in Liberal, Kan., died Monday in Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. He was 56.
He was a 1984 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in the Army until 1992. One of his last tours of duty was as an officer in a medical troop for the 11th Armored Cavalry in Germany. He then earned a medical degree from the University of Kansas and completed his surgical residency at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.
In 2006, Dr. Howard rejoined the Army and served as a physician and general surgeon at the Bassett Army Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska. After he retired from active duty in 2012, he moved to Liberal, where he was a physician and general surgeon at Southwest Medical Center. He helped to establish the hospital’s Wound Care Center.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, the former Rhonda VanHoose; two sons, Stephen and Rory II; two daughters, Lauren and Deanna; his mother, Bernice; six brothers, Alvin Haynie, Ronnie Travis, Willie, Brandon, Tim Williams and Jerome January; two sisters, Vivian Duplantis and Diane January; and a granddaughter. Many of his survivors live in Buffalo.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in All Nations Church in Liberal before his last rites in Buffalo.
