The Cattaraugus County Legislature is giving $25,000 to the SPCA to help pay for the care of more than 600 animals seized from a farm last month.
The legislature, which has a contract with the SPCA in Cattaraugus County, voted this week to transfer $25,000 from its contingency fund to the SPCA. The agency has spent thousands of dollars in food and veterinarian bills to care for the animals. Their owners, Donald and Bonnie George, have pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges in Farmersville Town Court.
The legislature also set up an animal cruelty register earlier this year. Those convicted of animal cruelty in the county are not allowed to own an animal for 10 years, and those providing animals are prohibited from selling or giving animals to them.
While the 400 birds have been taken to sanctuaries, the SPCA is looking for foster homes for the rest of the animals.
