Jail inmate attacks deputies

A 29-year-old alleged Buffalo street gang member awaiting trial on felony weapons charges has been charged with a second attack in the Erie County Holding Center in the last seven months, this time for allegedly punching a deputy, Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Wednesday.

Seymour Atkinson was subdued Monday by other deputies when he began punching in the face a deputy who had just taken his handcuffs off in his housing unit after a court appearance. Atkinson was secured with mechanical restraints and taken to the jail medical unit where he was evaluated by officials of the County Health Department’s Correctional Health unit. Atkinson, who already faces trial on a felony weapons charge and on felony assault charges for an attack on another inmate last Sept. 15, will be charged with additional criminal and administrative disciplinary charges for Monday’s incident, the sheriff said.
