Dogs’s barks alert Village of Hamburg woman to fire in her home

Sophia, a 6-month-old German shepherd, is credited with alerting a Village of Hamburg woman to a fire in her Chapel Glen Drive home early Monday.

The dog’s barks awakened Kathleen Heftka, 61, who left the house as firefighters from the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Company arrived about 5:30 a.m.

Eric Dahlgren, first assistant chief, said Heftka did not require need Red Cross assistance because she has relatives in the area. The fire, which reportedly began outside the house, remains under investigation. A damage estimate was not available.
