Quick work saves Market Street art gallery from fire; adjacent business damaged

LOCKPORT — A neighbor noticed smoke at 4 p.m. Saturday at World Automotive, and Lockport firefighters were on the scene in less than a minute, said Lockport Fire Department Chief Patrick Brady.

The auto parts store is at Market and Exchange streets and shares 10,000 square feet of the 90,000 square foot mixed-use ART247 building. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire and no smoke, fire or water damage was reported by the Market Street gallery and its tenants.

However damage at World Automotive was estimated at nearly $100,000. Brady said when fire fighters arrived they found fire coming out of the garage door and they put a hose into the building to contain the fire. The building is valued at $430,000 and owned by Heather Grimmer.

He said firefighters were at the scene until after 8 p.m.. They pulled most of the metal flashing out of the building to make sure the fire did not spread and cut out part of the roof.

Brady said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but may be related to smoking materials. He said employees had closed up at 3 p.m.

South Lockport and Wrights Corners volunteer fire departments were on standby.
