TORONTO - Buffalo may finally get another chance to host a playoff game. Surprisingly, the team playing in town would be the Erie Otters.
The Ontario Hockey League junior team announced its first-round schedule Saturday night, and the fifth game would be held in April 2 in First Niagara Center. The Otters’ home rink, Erie Insurance Arena, is already booked that day for the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Championships.
The Sabres have welcomed the Otters to their home in the past. While courting Connor McDavid last season, Buffalo hosted an October regular-season game. McDavid is gone, but the Otters still boast Dylan Strome, the third overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, and draft prospect Alex DeBrincat, who has 51 goals in 59 games.
Erie will face the Saginaw Spirit in the best-of-seven series that starts Friday. The Otters are the No. 1 seed.
