Mabelene Thompson Wright, a retired senior librarian clerk, died Tuesday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 73.
Born in Lancaster, S.C., her family relocated to Buffalo, where she graduated from East High School. She married English Wright in 1965.
She received certification as a nursing assistant and also studied business and computer courses.
Mrs. Wright retired in 2005 as a senior librarian clerk in the Central Library of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System.
A longtime member of St. Paul’s AME Zion Church, she served as church secretary, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Usher Board, the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society and the Lay Council. She founded Afternoon of Inspirations, a study and learning program for the church’s seniors.
Mrs. Wright was her family’s historian. She also was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles. She was active in the Sisters of Sisterhood and was a member of Buffalo Innovators, a social group of Carolina expats who live in Buffalo.
Survivors include two sons, Edric and Daryl; a daughter, Sharonda; a sister, Lillian Jones; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be at held 11 a.m. Monday in St. Paul’s AME Zion Church, 610 E. Eagle St.
