SoPark Corporation President and COO Rupa Shanmugam was honored by the Manufacturing Institute with the Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award. The award honors women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers and represent all levels of the manufacturing industry.


University at Buffalo researcher and inventor Paras Prasad was named the 2016 recipient of the Gold Medal of the SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. The award is the society’s highest honor and is awarded to one individual each year. At UB, Prasad, serves as executive director of the Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics. He is a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Electrical Engineering.

Broadland Wineries launched 716 Cellars, two wines that have been created with the idea of celebrating Buffalo and WNY. With every bottle sold of the Pinot Grigio, 50 cents will go to the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter and with every bottle sold of the Shiraz Cabernet, 50 cents will go to the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. More than $2,400 has already been donated to local charities.


Dollar General celebrated the opening of its new location at 3661 Ransomville Road in Ransomville recently. Traditional Dollar General stores employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on the need.
