Care aide completes restitution in theft from terminally ill victim

LOCKPORT – Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon was told this week that a former home-care aide who pleaded guilty five years ago to stealing credit cards from a terminally ill Lewiston woman had completed restitution.

Dora T. Chatmon, 28, of Niagara Falls, and a co-defendant, Leonard James of Niagara Falls, each were assessed a $6,450 share of the payback for the illegal purchases with the stolen cards, which occurred in September and October 2010. On Jan. 25, Sheldon threatened to send Chatmon to prison for violating the terms of her probation by not paying the money.

Up until last summer, Chatmon had paid only $160 toward her share. She paid back $3,900 in August and completed payment since Sheldon’s threat.
