When it takes you three games to get through the quarterfinals of your conference's postseason tournament, chances are it could cost you in the polls.
That's what happened to Quinnipiac which fell from the top spot to No. 2 after needed three games to beat Cornell to advance in the ECAC tournament. North Dakota, which had been on the Bobcats heels for weeks, swept Colorado College in the NCHC quarterfinals to improve to 30-5-3 on the season and take over the top spot in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Hockey poll.
Suffering setbacks this week were Boston University, swept by UMass-Lowell in the Hockey East quarterfinals and Notre Dame, which ran into a hot Northeastern team in the Hockey East quarters. The Huskies swept the Fighting Irish. That jumped Northeastern on my ballot to No. 13. The Huskies have won 11 straight.
Also jumping into my ballot this week is Minnesota State and Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs haven't put up a great overall record, but are now 17-14-5 after sweeping Miami (Ohio) in the quarterfinals of the NCHC tournament. They rank 13th in the Pairwise and have the No. 1 ranked strength of schedule in the nation. So in they go.
Out came Nebraska- Omaha, which has lost eight straight and bowed out of the NCHC tournament to Denver in the quarterfinals. Also off my ballot was Rensselaer after being swept by Harvard and Clarkson which lost to St. Lawrence. The Saints went back in my ballot which, by the way, is here:
1. North Dakota
4. St. Cloud State
5. Boston College
8. Boston University
12. Notre Dame
14. Michigan Tech
16. Minnesota State
18. St. Lawrence
19. Penn State
20. Robert Morris
