The madness that is college basketball in March stirred up its usual craziness over the weekend, and that’s only counting what happened among men’s and women’s team in the Big 4. When the month began, only hopeless romantics would have envisioned UB reaching the Big Dance.
Folks, this is why we watch.
St. Bonaventure’s basketball teams were better than Buffalo. The Bonnies had better records while playing in tougher conferences. It doesn’t matter at this time of year. Winning does. The unexpected happens so often in March that perhaps it should be considered the norm and not the exception.
The UB women’s team, with their 8-10 conference record, are going to the NCAAs while the Bonaventure women and their 12-4 conference record are virtually certain to be headed for the WNIT. When the two teams met in December, the Bonnies waltzed to a 36-point win.
UB’s men reached the MAC final Saturday while Bona was bounced in the quarterfinals. The Bonnies are at the mercy of the selection committee. They’re on the bubble after twice beating Saint Joseph’s, which came back from a 14-point deficit to win Friday and toppled top-seeded Dayton on Saturday to reach the A-10 final.
Welcome to March Madness.
