GLENS FALLS – Middle Early College is not the run of the mill Class C team.
The Kats play in one of the toughest leagues in Western New York and fortify that by scheduling up whenever the opportunity presents itself. So there are times when Middle College does look like it should be in a higher class size when it plays against an opponent in its classification.
Friday afternoon was one of them. That proved to be bad news for AuSable Valley (20-4).
The Kats are one win away from securing their second New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship as they earned a spot in the Class C final by trouncing the Section VII champions, 75-51.
Senior Gary Foster scored a game-high 22 points and scored his 1,000th career point on the nose on a late fourth-quarter free throw to lead Middle College (19-7), which plays the winner of Friday afternoon’s IV-Moravia versus I-Haldane semifinal at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
Middle College fell behind 2-0 but scored the next 13 points during a 19-9 first quarter. The Kats led 37-22 at halftime and cruised into the fourth quarter with a 57-36 advantage.
This is Middle College’s fourth title game appearance in as many trips to the final four, with the Kats winning the crown in 2010.
