Rev. Francis J. Zmozynski, retired pastor, musician

May 19, 1931 – March 6, 2016

Father Francis J. Zmozynski, retired Catholic Diocese pastor, died Sunday. He was 84.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Little Seminary High School. He was ordained at Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, and also attended Niagara University.

He was an assistant pastor and professor at a number of churches in the Diocese of Buffalo from 1958 to 1975. He returned to his work as a pastor in 1975 and served throughout Western New York until 1991.

From 1991 to 2004, when he retired, Father Zmozynski worked as senior parochial vicar, moderator, spiritual director and chaplain in Niagara County.

He received a master’s degree in music from the University at Buffalo and worked as band director at Villa Maria Institute of Music as well as director for various choirs. In addition he worked with the Little Symphony Orchestra and University at Buffalo Band.

His love of music also led him to perform his own work in a number concerts and recitals, and he lectured on church music at UB.

Father Zmozynski is survived by nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Bishop Edward M. Grosz at 10 a.m. Thursday in Queen of Martyrs Church, 180 George Urban Blvd., Cheektowaga.
