‘Rolling’ meth lab leads to two arrests

A suspicious car parked behind a motel on Hamburg Turnpike turned out to be “a rolling meth lab,” Lackawanna police said Tuesday.

Jared M. Leavitt, 30, of the first block of Bayview Avenue, Dunkirk, and Alexis J. Giza, 25, of the 100 block of Gould Avenue, Depew, were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine in the 2011 Toyota Camry.

When Officers Joseph Pyjas and Abdul Omar approached the vehicle at about 12:30 a.m. Monday, the couple stepped from the car and started walking away. After the officers found a black bag containing apparatus to “cook” the drug, Leavitt and Giza were quickly taken into custody, according to Capt. Joseph E. Leo, head of city’s detective bureau.

“This was a one-pot methamphetamine cooking operation,” Leo said. “We had to call in the Hazmat team and a group from the State Police because the ingredients are explosive. The substances were moved into a trailer and taken to the State Police lab in Olean.”

The other charge against Leavitt and Giza was second-degree criminal possession of methamphetamine manufacturing material.
