Six local teams compete in inaugural state cheerleading championships

West Seneca West placed the highest of six local teams competing at the first-ever New York State high school cheerleading championships Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.

West scored 90.95 out of a possible 120 points to place fourth in the D-I large division, while Lew-Port took fifth in D-II small with 86.55 points.

Teams were broken into Divisions I and II by school size, and then filtered into large and small subdivisions by the number of members on the cheerleading team, with 17 or more members constituting a large team.

Each routine – all 2 minutes, 30 seconds long – was scored on a statewide rubric that was agreed upon by NYSPHSAA cheerleading committee.

West Seneca East placed sixth in D-II large, Hamburg was eighth in D-I small and Maryvale was 11th in D-II small, while Silver Creek took 10th in the coed division.

Hamburg’s Erica Giannicchi took home the section’s sportsmanship award.
