‘Person of interest’ questioned in fatal hit-and-run in Cheektowaga

A 27-year-old Depew man died Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Cheektowaga after he was struck by a car in what appeared to be a hit-and-run incident.

Adam C. Olewniczak, of A Street, died of his injuries after he was found unresponsive in the parking lot of 1460 French Road at 4:55 a.m. Sunday and was rushed to the hospital.

A preliminary investigation by Cheektowaga police, who responded to a phone call alerting them, concluded that the man had been struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the former Kmart store in Transit French Square Plaza, now owned by David Gordon of Dave’s Christmas Central.

Using video images, police later located a vehicle and driver, though the investigation continues, officials said. The vehicle is in police possession, but the driver has not been arrested.

“The investigation revealed who we think it was that hit him,” said Cheektowaga Assistant Police Chief James Speyer. “We’re working with that person now. He is a person of interest, along with his vehicle.”
