Letter: Reserve Memorial Wall for those killed in Vietnam

Reserve Memorial Wall for those killed in Vietnam

I am a Vietnam veteran who has friends’ names on the Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. I recently heard that Sen. Chuck Schumer is considering backing a request to add to the wall the names of sailors who died in a training accident during the Vietnam War.

While I have the utmost respect for those who gave their lives for their country, I do not feel that the wall is the proper location. The wall is the Vietnam War Memorial, it is not the Vietnam era memorial. As such it has a special purpose – to honor those who died in Vietnam.

I would prefer that the significance would not be diluted by being overly inclusive. I have contacted Schumer’s office regarding my feelings and urge others who may feel the same to also make their feelings known.
