Genesee Republicans back Sheron for sheriff

ALEXANDER – Undersheriff William A. Sheron Jr., a 38-year employee of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, has received the endorsement from the county’s Republican Party caucus in his bid to replace retiring Sheriff Gary T. Maha.

In voting Thursday at the Alexander Fire Department Recreation Hall, Sheron, a Batavia resident, earned 82 percent of the weighted ballots while Deputy Christopher A. Parker of Oakfield tallied 18 percent.

Both men have stated they will not participate in a primary, and since there are no candidates for the position on the Democratic side, it seems as though Sheron – who has served as the undersheriff for the past 20 years – will run unopposed in the November election.

“I’m very honored to have been selected by the Republicans, and I am looking forward to leading this great agency for the next four years,” Sheron said.

Sheron indicated that, if he is elected, Sgt. Gregory Walker would become the new undersheriff.
