Power Take: Witherspoon’s coaching tree sprouts many success stories

Reggie Witherspoon is having a fine first year as an assistant at Tennessee-Chattanooga, now 26-5 and top seeded in the Southern Conference tourney. His UB coaching tree is thriving, too.

Turner Battle, who starred and coached for Witherspoon, is in his second year as an assistant at UAB (24-5), the Conference USA regular-season champ. Mike Mennenga, who coached at UB and Canisius, is at Oregon, which is No. 9 in the country at 24-6 and leading the Pac-12 race.

Zach Filzen, the No. 2 three-point shooter in UB history, is 27-0 in his debut as head coach at Lancaster Bible College, which makes its first NCAA Division III tourney appearance Friday.

Former UB student manager Adam Cohen is an assistant at Vanderbilt (19-11), third in the SEC after beating Kentucky last week. Cohen, a Williamsville North grad, is 29 and a rising star in the profession. Jake Kroll, another former UB manager, assists Mike MacDonald at Daemen (18-9), No. 2 seed in the ECC Tournament.

I guess there’s more than one way to leave a coaching legacy.
