Anita Alvarez of Kenmore is going to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this year.
She and her synchronized swimming partner, Mariya Koroleva of Concord, Calif., finished seventh in the duet free competition at the qualification tournament in Rio on Thursday. That matched their seventh-place effort in the duet tech event on Wednesday, and was good enough to earn a ticket to the Games.
It will be the first time Alvarez, 19, has participated in the Games, The Olympics will be held August 5-21. Koroleva competed in the 2012 Olympics in London.
“We swam with more confidence and better presentation, and we have improved our synchronization,” Koroleva said. “We are happy with both our performances and with the results, as we are much closer in scores to our competitors. And obviously we are very excited to go to the Olympics this summer.”
