Canadian trucker charged with trying to smuggle Polish citizens into U.S.

A Canadian truck driver was charged Thursday with trying to smuggle two Polish citizens across the border.

Lesnek Budzyna, formerly of Poland, is charged with alien smuggling and making false statements in connection with his arrest Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango said the defendant is accused of hiding Monika Gondek and Jerzy Mariusz Modej under blankets in the back of his truck cab while crossing the Peace Bridge into the U.S.

Mango said Gondek and Modej, who also are facing charges, were recently denied non-immigrant visas to the U.S. All three were ordered detained by U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr.
