Ex-astronaut Kelly to speak at safety conference

Capt. Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut whose brother just returned to Earth after nearly a year in space, will be a keynote speaker at the Western New York Safety Conference in April in Niagara Falls.

Kelly is also known as the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who nearly died in a 2011 mass shooting.

Kelly spent more than 50 days in space during his career with NASA. Prior to that, he served as a naval aviator, and flew combat missions in Operation Desert Storm.

The safety conference, which promotes workplace safety through its annual conference, said Kelly will “offer insight, drawn from his experiences, to truly define and achieve success.”

Kelly is part of a “twins study” by NASA with his brother, Scott, who returned to Earth on Wednesday from 340 days aboard the International Space Station.

Joe Sweeney, who has more than 30 years’ experience in investment banking and sports management, will also be a keynote speaker. And Mark Jones, Ford/United Auto Workers Joint Health and Safety Director, will also be a presenter.

The conference will take place at Seneca Niagara Casino on April 6 and 7. OSHA compliance classes will be offered April 4 and 5. Information is available at
