Marie C. Casillo, retired Catholic school teacher

April 14, 1923 – Feb. 27, 2016

Marie C. Casillo, of Hamburg, a retired Catholic school teacher, died Friday in Mercy Hospital, following a short illness. She was 92.

Mrs. Casillo was born in Buffalo and graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1941.

The former Marie Battaglia married Louis J. Casillo in 1949.

A teacher for more than 25 years, Mrs. Casillo taught eighth-grade math and English at Nativity School on the West Side and the former Mother of Divine Grace School in Cheektowaga. She also served as principal at Mother of Divine Grace for a short period of time.

She continued her education at Medaille College, graduating cum laude with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1976 at age 53, while caring for her family and working as a full-time teacher.

Mrs. Casillo was a member of the PAR Ladies Auxiliary and the Buffalo Choral Arts Society. She also was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Queen of Angels Church in Lackawanna.

She was an avid reader, and enjoyed travel, playing cards and casino gaming. She also loved to bowl, and was active in the sport for 72 years, bowling a 199 at the age of 90.

Mrs. Casillo was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey; and a sister, Pauline Giambrone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 144 Warsaw St., Lackawanna.
