Bankruptcy filings in the Buffalo-Rochester region increased 20.2 percent in February from a year ago, a rare increase from the year before.
The number of filings rose to 310 from 258 a year ago, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. It was the first year-over-year increase since July 2015.
The total was still down 51 percent from February 2009, the year when bankruptcy filings peaked before six consecutive full-year declines. And the total for February 2015 was the smallest number of filings for any month for bankruptcy court data going back to 2007.
Even so, February’s total was up 6 percent from January, and was the third straight month-over-month increase.
For the first two months of this year, the number of bankruptcy cases filed in the Buffalo-Rochester region was up 4.5 percent from a year ago.
