Police: Cheektowaga cop had .19 BAC

An off-duty Cheektowaga police officer who crashed into another car last week on Como Park Boulevard had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19 percent, more than twice the legal limit, the department said Monday.

Nicholas Jakubowski, a six-year veteran of the force, tried to make a left turn in front of another vehicle in the vicinity of Bellevue Avenue just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, Assistant Cheektowaga Police Chief James Speyer said.

The other driver suffered a minor foot injury.

Jakubowski, 29, who had a blood-alcohol content more than double the legal limit of 0.08 percent, was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI. He was also ticketed for failure to yield the right-of-way.

He has been suspended without pay and will be disciplined per department policy and union contract terms, Speyer said.

The patrolman has “an unblemished record,” Speyer said.

He is scheduled to appear in Cheektowaga Town Court on March 9.
