Gary D. Keefer, retired Niagara County pharmacist, Navy veteran

April 8, 1932 – Feb. 18, 2016

LOCKPORT – Gary D. Keefer, a retired pharmacist, died last Thursday in Eastern Niagara Hospital after a brief illness. He was 83.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1950 graduate of Bennett High School and worked part time as a pharmacist apprentice while he studied for a pharmacy degree at the University of Buffalo from 1951 to 1956. After serving two years in the Navy, he returned to UB and completed his bachelor’s degree in 1959.

Mr. Keefer worked for Okie’s Pharmacy in Wilson, Barnum’s Pharmacy in Youngstown and Smith Pharmacy in Lockport. He retired from Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Lockport in 1994.

A former resident of Wilson and Wright’s Corners, he was a former elder of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church at North Ridge. He also was a member of the USS Canberra Association, the UB Pharmaceutical Alumni Association and Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity.

He collected model railroad items, aviation gear and antique and contemporary military memorabilia. He also enjoyed photography, history, geography and fishing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Timothy, Thomas and Paul; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church at North Ridge, 4169 Church Road, Lockport
