Holding Center inmate charged with making shank out of light bulb

An inmate at the Erie County Holding Center fashioned a shank out of a broken light bulb and some duct tape, a weapon that was discovered in the jail last weekend.

The shank fell from the bed sheets of inmate Jemmott Pierce during a search of his cell, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Pierce, 18, who was already being held on gang assault and robbery charges, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon with intent to use and possession of dangerous contraband. He also faces administrative disciplinary charges, the sheriff’s office said.

No one was injured with the shank and deputies from the Police Services and Jail Management divisions are investigating the incident, authorities said.
