Buffalo soccer recruiting tracker 2016

Annually on the first Wednesday of February, National Signing Day proves to become a major spectacle for high school student-athletes revealing their college destinations. But that's just the start.

The Big 4 Division I colleges, as well as the area's Division III schools, continue to vie for the remaining talent through the end of March and beyond, as paperwork -- like transcripts and visas -- can take time to be resolved.

Division I soccer doesn't have the recruiting suspense of power-conference college football, but that doesn't mean the intensity, travel and communication required to sign the best players to fit a program is any easier.

For Buffalo's best high school soccer players, the signing period means a celebration of high school successes and the groundwork for an even brighter athletic future.

Here's our round-up, mostly gathered through Twitter. Bold names indicate that the respective college has confirmed the signing.

University at Buffalo men and women:

Read our separate post on the University at Buffalo's recruits, as their 2016 classes are pretty set in stone. Also, listen to UB men's head coach Stu Riddle elaborate on his recruits on the "Football Club of Buffalo Show," Ep. 12.

LOCALS TO HIGH MAJORS:

*Frank Cotroneo, defender from Empire DA, Grand Island HS to Villanova University

-- Even though he played just one year for the Vikings, Cotroneo thrived as an athletic outside back for the Empire Revolution Development Academy, and he'll play with NPSL side FC Buffalo this summer as college prep.

*Amanda Burns, midfielder from WNY Flash Academy, Clarence HS to West Virginia University

-- Although the Red Devils didn't claim their coveted state title, Burns joins the Mountaineers, who finished No. 4 in the Coaches Poll, No. 7 in RPI and lost in the Elite Eight of the national tournament.

Clarence HS star Amanda Burns will head to West Virginia, an NCAA Division I top 10 program in 2015.
