MAYVILLE – One man was airlifted to a Pennsylvania hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in one of the two snowmobiling accidents reported Thursday afternoon in Chautauqua County, according to the County Sheriff’s Office.
James P. Karalus, 44, of Brockton, was Starflighted to the Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., shortly after he was run over by a fellow snowmobiler as he was leading a group of snowmobilers in a field near Thorton Road in the Town of Cherry Creek about 4:15 p.m.
Karalus lost control of his snowmobile after he hit what deputies described as a patch of deep snow. He fell off his snowmobile and was run over by a one being driven by Gregory A. Irish, 52, also of Brocton. Karalus was treated at the scene by members of the Cherry Creek and Ellington Fire Department emergency medical technicians but his injuries needed hospital treatment.
About 3:10 p.m. Thursday Chris Palmerton, 57, of Mayville crashed into a tree after he failed to negotiate a curve on the snowmobile tail near Barnes Road in the Town of Stockton. Palmerton was treated at the scene by Stockton Fire Department emergency medical technicians and released. Sheriff’s deputies investigated both snowmobile accidents and no charges were lodged against any snowmobilers.
