Walter E. Meyer, of Orchard Park, a retired executive recruiter, died unexpectedly Saturday in Mercy Hospital. He was 86.
Born in Rochester, he was a graduate of Temple University and served stateside in the Army in the early 1950s.
Mr. Meyer began working for Honeywell in the early 1960s, selling computers, and lived in Syracuse briefly before he moved to Orchard Park.
He later joined Romac and Associates, an executive recruiting firm, then started his own company, Walter Meyer & Associates, in the early 1980s. He retired about 15 years ago.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Orchard Park Town Board in the 1970s and was a member of the town Zoning Board of Appeals for many years.
A lover of nature and the outdoors, he took many hiking, climbing and bicycling trips with friends and family to the White Mountains, the Catskills, the Adirondacks and many locations on the Eastern Seaboard.
He also enjoyed camping in Allegany State Park and spending weekends at his family’s camp in the Finger Lakes.
For many years, he and his wife were members of the Edelweiss Ski Club and the Niagara Frontier Bicycle Club.
They also were longtime Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra season ticket holders.
His wife of 58 years, the former Elisabeth “Betty” Allen, director of the Orchard Park Co-op Nursery School, died Jan. 13.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Keim; two sons, Paul and David; a sister, Dorothy Powell; four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
A private memorial service is planned in the spring.
