Lockport man jailed for injuring State Police investigator

LOCKPORT – A man who injured a State Police investigator will report to the Niagara County Jail Friday to begin a six-month sentence, to be followed by 4½ years on probation.

County Judge Sara Sheldon imposed the sentence Wednesday on Kyle M. Burkwit, 26, of Washington Street, Lockport, who pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree assault. He inflicted a shoulder injury on Investigator James Buono July 24 as Buono was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Burkwit in the City of Lockport.

Burkwit was given extra time to surrender because he is to be sentenced Thursday in Clarence Town Court on a misdemeanor forgery conviction. That could add as much as a year to his jail time.

Burkwit told Sheldon he’s now doing well in outpatient drug rehabilitation.
