Patricia J. Goettel, a retired telephone operator, died Tuesday at her daughter’s home in Kennesaw, Ga., following a lengthy illness. She was 89.
The former Patricia J. Flanagan was born in Bronx, N.Y., and lived in Amherst for 70 years.
She was a telephone operator for New York Telephone Co. and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital for 35 years, retiring in 1985. Mrs. Goettel left high school to join the workforce, and after she became a grandmother, she worked hard to earn her high school diploma.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, the Getzville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary of George F. Lamm Post No. 622, American Legion, and Remove Intoxicated Drivers.
She was president of 20th Century Republican Women and Amherst Republican Women, which recognized her with the Gladys V. Coon Award.
Survivors include her daughter, Fern Updegraff; a sister, Ceil Caruda; a brother, Robert Flanagan; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon Thursday in the Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Dr.
